Founded in 1863, Rhode Island Hospital is a 719 bed tertiary care center and the only Level I trauma center serving a population of approximately 1.5 million people from Rhode Island, Eastern Connecticut, and Southeastern Massachusetts. With nearly 150,000 patient visits to the emergency department last year, Rhode Island Hospital boasts one of the most active emergency departments in the country.
As the major teaching hospital of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Rhode Island Hospital is a nationally-recognized academic medical center. Annually, some 385,000 diagnostic radiology examinations are performed along with over 5,000 vascular and non-vascular interventional radiologic procedures. In 2015, Rhode Island Hospital was designated a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and eligible patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of experts, including neurointerventional radiologists from our department.
Located on the Rhode Island Hospital campus, Hasbro Children's Hospital is a pediatric care facility that includes a dedicated pediatric emergency department and pediatric imaging center, opened in 2006. Hasbro provides care for some 7,000 inpatients and 60,000 outpatients annually.
The pediatric imaging center is a tertiary referral site, providing dedicated computed radiography, US, CT, MR, and sedation services for children.
The Miriam Hospital is a 247-bed hospital and a major teaching affiliate of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Together with Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital is part of the Lifespan health system. The two hospitals operate on the same PACS system and both are fully staffed by the faculty of the Alpert Medical School's Department of Diagnostic Imaging.
Our department has been a leader in innovative regional therapy and was instrumental in helping The Miriam Hospital be designated the first JCAHO-accredited stroke center in Rhode Island. The MR magnet is a Siemens 1.5 Tesla Aera scanner that has been continually updated to provide state-of-the-art imaging, including cardiac MR, peripheral MR angiography, and MRCP. With over 61,000 ED visits yearly, there are over 115,000 radiology exams including over 30,000 CT, and over 5,400 MRIs performed last year.
The primary teaching affiliate of Brown's Alpert Medical School for obstetrics, gynecology, and neonatology, Women & Infants had more than 8,400 deliveries in 2014. Women & Infants has been recognized for excellence with numerous awards.
The diagnostic imaging department at Women & Infants is capable of performing MR, CT, computed radiography, fluoroscopy, digital breast tomosynthesis, 3D & 4D ultrasonography, and stereotactic breast biopsies. Our department performs interventional procedures for patients at Women & Infants, including paracentesis, thoracentesis, and procedures under ultrasound-, stereotactic-, or MR-guidance.
